The London Eye has captured the public’s imagination. In the eleven years since opening, over 38 million visitors have enjoyed unparalleled views over the capital, and it has made a significant increase in footfall to business in the area.

Sweeping one of the world's most famous skylines at 135m in height, it provides a spectacular 30 minute slow moving 'flight' over the heart of the capital and a new perspective on its wealth of culture and history.

The wheel is cantilevered out over the river, supported on one side only, and touches the ground lightly in only three locations.

Several engineering disciplines were involved. Each brought innovations that had to work in harmony with the others to realise the landmark and symbol of contemporary heritage that the London Eye has become.

An important aspect of the project was the creation of high quality public realm space at the base of the wheel, setting the standard for other public space in the area.

The design of the wheel is visually light and , combines an elegant

structure, with aerodynamic capsules that – being located on the outside of the wheel- give the impression of being on top of a mountain in the middle of the city. Close teamwork delivered

the construction of the project in just 16 months, a showcase example of what innovative design, good management and effective teamwork can achieve.

David Marks and Julia Barfield took the entrepreneurial approach in establishing the London Eye Company.
