Hospital del Mar was designated as the hospital centre for the Olympic Games in 1992; which led to an in-depth modernization of the spaces and equipment of the existing building, a mono-bloc volume of 11 floors built in 1973. The volume was unconnected with the surroundings but included a public garden for access. As well as the structural and interior remodelling of the hospital building, the renovation plan included the definition of a biomedical research park, a building for outpatient consultations and a building for the Municipal Medical Research Institute.
With the extension completed in 2017, the hospital building completed the west façade of the health macro-block of Hospital del Mar and opened towards the Barceloneta Park. The first phase of the extension project for hospital services incorporated the criteria adopted since the renovation in 1992 and became the starting point in transformation of the spaces for the future. In consequence, criteria of energy efficiency were adopted and infrastructures of the latest technology were used. The topographical relation with the immediate surroundings of the block and with the external structures was fundamental.
The second phase of this expansion is under construction. A building is proposed without a trace of the various expansion phases that took place over time, with a unique operation and a clear formalization from the outside. The design of green roofs stands out on the third floor for the exclusive use of patients, family members and medical personnel, which decompresses the density of uses of the entire complex.
