In the past, hospitals were perceived as sterile, clinical places. They were geared more to function than design. Nowadays, the transformative power of design is used to create environments which actively promote healing and speed up the recovery of the patients. Bumrungrad Vitalife in Bangkok shows how the future of healthcare can be shaped through patient-oriented design by the Miaja Design Group which specialises in hospitality projects.

True to its roots - Bumrungrad in Thai means "care for the people" - the welfare philosophy of the hospital goes beyond medical treatment and also extends to the interior design. Architecture as therapy - Isabelle Miaja thus defines the multilayered approach for the interior spaces of Bumrungrad Vitalife and creates rooms which soothe and lift the spirits using soft elements and themes inspired by nature. Muted earth tones, soft white and metallic accents extend across the entire facility, from the reception area to the quiet, private treatment rooms. These colours not only serve as decoration but also reflect the light in an inviting way. Wall coverings with mountain themes and delicate flower patterns reflect the textures of nature, ground the room and link the patients with a greater, relaxing story.

Soft, round shapes which lead the patients through the room are supplemented by sweeping curves and organic lines. These are found again on the spiral staircase at the main entrance and in the curved edges of the furniture. They encouragement movement and also reduce the visual stress. The waiting areas and lounges are arranged so that they offer the highest degree of privacy. At the same time they convey a feeling of openness and unity.

The comfort of the patients is supported by modern, discretely integrated technology. Miaja Design selected the timeless LS 990 series from JUNG in stainless steel and classic brass finishes to complement the calming aesthetics of the hospital while keeping the functional integrity. The elegant push-buttons and sockets of the range are seamlessly integrated into the overall design. The integration of the JUNG KNX system in connection with the F 50 push-buttons enables intelligent automation throughout the patient environment. From lightscene control to the automatic adaptation of the room settings, the system matches the requirements of patients and staff and thus ensures an optimised care environment.
